our catholic life & mission

At St Bernard’s, our Catholic ethos is centered upon Gospel Values which drive all that we do. We provide an environment where children can ‘grow, love and learn following Jesus’, embedding values and characteristics to develop the whole person as well as embed the Catholic Faith.

Children of St Bernard's make exceptional contributions to the Catholic life of the school, leading assemblies and liturgical prayer. Catholic Social Teaching is at the heart of our curriculum, where children look to achieve our vision of 'excellence in all we do' and 'thrive' in all aspects of their lives. Our children and community always consider preferential treatment for the poor, and lead many charitable projects, putting other people's needs before their own.

Whole school curriculum themes of social justice and conservation enable children to engage with real-time, worldwide issues. As guardians of our planet and humanity, children follow the teachings of Jesus and the Catholic Church to have a voice to make changes in society for the better. Our work on Laudato Si and conservation has inspired other schools locally and nationally, who have participated in curriculum projects we have led. We also work in partnership with a local theatre company and have developed a play about the plight of refugees which has toured nationally. Recent whole school projects focussed on 'everyone is welcome' also demonstrate our commitment to living our Catholic values.

Prayer and worship takes place daily, of which children share ownership by being involved in planning and leading sessions themselves. Each session concludes with an action that shows how we can ‘go Forth’ and how our understanding of God’s message can be used in our daily lives. Our communal and class environments reflect our Catholic faith, with each class having its own focal point and display that demonstrates the importance of God’s Word.
